Shoot Locations in Medellin: Rooftops, Comuna 13, Guatape, and What Each One Requires

Published September 3, 2026

Medellin is the reggaeton capital and the videos have made a specific set of locations famous: the escalators in Comuna 13, the Metrocable over the hillsides, the rooftops with the valley behind them, the fincas in the hills, the Piedra at Guatape. This is a working map of those locations sorted by the only question that matters on a production schedule: is it a permit or a phone call.

Permit locations

Comuna 13. Public space, so the seven-day city permit applies, but the shoot only works with the community organizations and local guides who run the area. Budget a fixer and a liaison. This is the most requested and the most mishandled location in the city.

Metrocable and Metro. The Metro is its own operator with its own permit, separate from the city. The cable cars over the northern and western comunas are the iconic shot and they require the Metro's sign-off.

Atanasio Girardot. The stadium is run by its operator and shoots go through them; it is the home venue for Feid and J Balvin's Medellin shows, which is why it keeps appearing on shortlists.

Guatape and the Piedra del Penol. A different municipality with its own permitting for public space around the rock and the embalse. Ninety minutes from the city. Boats and private estates on the water are the private-side options there.

Jardin Botanico, Pueblito Paisa, Ciudad del Rio and MAMM, Plaza Botero, Parque de las Luces, Parques del Rio. Institutional or municipal sites with limited dates and their own approval on top of the city permit. FilMedellin's public location catalog lists what is available.

Day-rate locations

Rooftops and penthouses in Poblado and Laureles. The valley view is the reason. Two constraints: the building's propiedad horizontal has to allow it, and the noise environment means night shoots with playback are where police show up. Hotel rooftops (The Charlee, Binn's Etro) avoid the PH problem because the hotel controls the space.

Fincas and estates in the Oriente and Santa Elena. The luxury-mansion aesthetic. Weather, altitude, and drive time are the variables. Santa Elena is cold after dark and the road is slow with a truck.

Industrial spaces in Guayabal, Itagui, and Ciudad del Rio. Warehouses and conversions for the harder urban look.

Clubs. Perro Negro and its peers are the urbano nightlife aesthetic; buyouts are negotiated and nights are the only option.

Scouted houses. La Local keeps a library of scouted properties for clips and commercials, including El Retiro and Santa Fe de Antioquia.

What locations cost

There is no current public tariff for private locations in Medellin. The industry pattern, which we flag as an estimate and not a sourced survey, runs from the low to mid hundreds of dollars for an influencer half-day on a rooftop to the mid four figures for a full commercial day at a mansion or finca, with club buyouts negotiated case by case. Public-space occupancy fees vary by zone and the last detailed table is from 2023.

When the weather cooperates

January through March is the driest window. April and May and September through November bring afternoon storms that move exteriors to the morning. Feria de las Flores in late July and early August is visual gold and logistical hell: the city is packed, permits and hotels are tight, and Colombiamoda often overlaps it, which is also when fashion and brand shoots peak.
